Tips for Keeping Your Skin Healthy This Winter

Tips for Keeping Your Skin Healthy This Winter

It’s February, the days are shorter, there is a bitter chill in the air, the central heating is blasting, and there are several more months of winter to go. With the winter months, your face can begin to feel quite dry and tight, as the winter elements and central heating play havoc on your skin.

Every week, I see patients in my practise who are looking to refresh their look. They often ask me what is the best way to get rid of wrinkles and sun damage. Apart from using laser treatments, Botox, fillers and plastic surgery to reduce the signs of aging, there are other ways to keep your skin healthy.

So what can we do during the winter months to keep our skin feeling refreshed? I would say that some of the best tips for keeping your skin healthy would be:

  1. Don’t smoke
  2. Wear sunscreen of factor 30+ on your face, neck, hands and body
  3. Follow a good skin care regime of cleansing and moisturizing
  4. Consider a retinol cream; the benefits of retinol include improving skin quality, elasticity and stimulating collagen
  5. Exfoliate your skin, using a cleaning product or a cleansing tool such as the Clarisonic to  improve the appearance of your skin
  6. Get your moles checked regularly on your hands, face and body
  7. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated
  8. Eat a healthy diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, proteins and anti-oxidants
  9. Limit alcohol consumption

Winter is also the perfect time to seek out a laser skin treatment for your face. You would typically have minimal sun exposure during the winter months, and it is the best time to have a laser treatment.
