Fat transfer has been around for over 25 years but has only recently started to become a popular method for breast augmentation in North America. It has long been popular in Europe and South America. Breast fat transfer entails liposuction to remove fat from a stubborn area on the body. This fat is then prepared and injected into the breast. It is a very meticulous procedure and can be time consuming. Each droplet of fat has to be individually placed to provide the best shape as well as to ensure the best fat survival. However, the results can be exquisite. Your breasts will feel perfectly natural because it is your own fat being used.
Other benefits include liposuction to that area of fat which otherwise never seems to disappear. Not only do you get to take fat from an area you don’t want it and put it into an area you do, there are virtually no scars. For women wanting to avoid an implant it is also a very good choice. Typically it is a better procedure for women wanting a smaller breast augmentation. For really large breast augmentations an implant is probably still your best choice. Some women have limited breast tissue such that any implant would be visible. Fat grafting can be used in conjunction with a traditional breast augmentation to conceal the appearance of the implant. This can give a very natural looking result.
Dr Shortt developed his skills in breast fat transfer during his breast reconstruction fellowship and cosmetic surgery fellowship. He performs this procedure regularly and is considered an expert. He frequently receives referrals from other plastic surgeons that specialize in breast surgery in order to further enhance the cosmetic result after their original surgery.
Dr Shortt will go over your options, so you feel that your surgery is specifically planned for you.
When to consider having this procedure?
In general, candidates for breast fat transfer are aged 18 – 70 years, are in good health, are able to have general anaesthetic, and may have one or more of the following characteristics:
dissatisfied with current breast cup size and shape
to conceal the edge of a breast augmentation implant in thin women
sagging or deflated breasts due to post-pregnancy or weight loss, lost breast volume due to the aging process
asymmetry (different sizes) of the left and right breasts, in shape or size
desire to enhance your current silhouette
breast enlargement to accompany another procedure such as liposuction, tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck
breast augmentation post breast cancer treatment
Correction of lumpectomy defects
What is the recovery time?
In general, the recovery time following a breast fat transfer procedure is approximately 1-2 weeks. As with any surgery under general anaesthetic, there are potential risks or complications to consider. During your private consultation, Dr Shortt will take a thorough medical history from you, discuss your surgical options, explain the complete procedure and potential risks, discuss what to expect pre and post breast fat transfer surgery, and your estimated recovery time.
