PATIENT RESOURCES / DR’s Blog

A breast lift and a tummy tuck are surgical procedures that go well together: one surgery day; one recovery; less costs; and an amazing body transformation. I perform breast and tummy surgeries together on a regular basis. It is referred to as the Mommy Makeover and is one of the most satisfying procedures for my patients and me. I see patients regularly who are interested in returning their bodies back to its pre-pregnancy stage.

A Mommy Makeover is a one-surgery life changer. It entails a tummy tuck and a breast surgery and it is truly a transformative procedure. That may be a breast reduction, breast augmentation, breast lift, or breast augmentation with a breast lift. You can have the two surgeries together, assuming that you are healthy and fit for surgery. Liposuction can also be done sparingly at the same time, or more extensively at a second procedure. Finally, if you have an umbilical hernia, you can have that treated at the same time as your abdominoplasty (tummy tuck.)

I usually advise patients that I can give them the best, long-term, lasting result when they are at a stable weight, which they can comfortably and realistically maintain for years. If you starve yourself and put on weight after the surgery, the results will not stay as beautiful as they could – compared with the surgery being performed at a more permanent weight. Several months at a stable weight is ideal. Any surgeon with a great reputation will certainly have some wait-time to get into see them, so perhaps seek a consultation when you are within 20 pounds of your target weight.

The advantages of a Mommy Makeover include: one surgery day, one recovery, significant cost savings, and getting a beautiful result at once, rather than having to wait.

How to choose your plastic surgeon:

Without a doubt, the most important consideration is that your surgery is done safely. Often friends or family doctors can start the search, if they know someone they like. Virtually, all my patients come from happy patients who have referred friends, or family doctors that have had the chance to see my work and the care I provide to my patients. Building that trust has come from a deliberate process of providing consistent quality results and superb patient care. Reviews such as RealSelf and RateMD can also be a good way of getting to know your surgeon’s reputation. Take some of it with a grain of salt.

You also need to make sure that your surgeon has an interest in the work that you are having done; not all surgeons do all things. Ask your surgeon about their training and experience for the surgery you are seeking. For a Mommy Makeover, the most important considerations for a beautiful tummy tuck are a natural looking belly button and a low hidden scar. For the breast surgery, it really needs to be customized. There are several options that can work, but some may be more ideal. Make sure your surgeon goes over your options, so you feel that your surgery is specifically planned for you.

Finally, you have to like your surgeon. That doesn’t mean you want to have them over for a bar-b-q. But it does mean you have to trust them, and know that they will be there to take care of you, to reassure you and to be available to you if there are any problems. You are putting your life and your beauty in their hands. You should have an easy relationship, where you can bring up any questions that you have and make sure that you are able to discuss your goals fully. You should feel like you can take your time and visit that surgeon for a second (or more) consultation to make sure you really are certain. You should never feel rushed or pressured. At the end of the day, you should trust your gut.

What is the recovery time for a Mommy Makeover?

Recovery time varies for everyone, but usually I tell patients that you are moving slowly for a couple days, feeling good at about a week, and wanting to get back to everything at 2 weeks. For office work, 1 week is doable and 2 is perfect. For heavy lifting, give yourself 6 weeks.

As with any surgery under general anaesthetic, there are potential risks or complications to consider. During your private consultation, your surgeon will take a thorough medical history from you, discuss your surgical options, explain the complete procedure and potential risks, discuss what to expect pre and post surgery, and your estimated recovery time.
